PRESS STATEMENT
Statement from Hetrick-Martin Institute CEO Amy Harclerode on the Recent Executive Order Targeting Trans Youth
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JANUARY 30, 2025, NEW YORK, NY
At Hetrick-Martin Institute, we are deeply troubled by the recent executive order that seeks to strip trans and nonbinary youth of their right to be recognized for who they are in federally funded schools. This cruel and unnecessary measure not only disregards the lived experiences of trans youth but also puts them at greater risk of harm.
Policies that deny a young person the ability to use their chosen name and pronouns, access the correct facilities, or participate fully in school life are more than just restrictive—they are deeply damaging. By erasing their identities, these policies create environments where trans youth feel unsafe, unseen, and unwelcome. The ability to use the name and pronouns that align with one’s gender identity is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right.
Studies show that when trans and nonbinary youth are denied affirmation of their identity, they experience increased rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. This order compounds the challenges they already face and sends a dangerous message that their identities are not valid.
To the young people we serve: HMI will always remain a welcoming and safer space where you can be your authentic self, free from judgment or restriction. No executive order will ever change that. We see you, we affirm you, and we are here for you.
We’re grateful for the critical work of Lambda Legal, the Human Rights Campaign, and other civil rights groups who continue to defend the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly our youth. Their advocacy is essential—but equally important is supporting organizations that address the immediate and urgent impact these harmful policies have on young people. Both efforts must exist together. HMI will continue to provide a safer space, direct support, and critical resources for LGBTQIA+ youth while standing with those fighting for systemic change.
In times like these, it is more important than ever to remind trans and nonbinary youth that they are not alone. HMI remains determined in our mission to provide the care, resources, and community that every young person deserves. We encourage all who are impacted by this order to reach out for support—whether it be from us, from trusted educators, or from the advocacy organizations fighting for justice.
We are with you, always.
