Stand in Solidarity on Trans Day of Remembrance
Today, on Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), we pause to honor the lives of those tragically lost to anti-trans violence. This year alone, 350 transgender individuals worldwide—28 of them Americans—have been reported murdered, according to Trans Murder Monitoring. Sadly, this is likely an undercount. In any given year, the majority of those are trans women of color, Black women in particular, who were dreadfully killed. This is the brutal endpoint of hatred and vilification. It must come to an end.
At HMI, we are committed to eradicating anti-trans violence, stigma, and discrimination through education, awareness, and direct support for queer and trans youth.
The violence, and the ongoing news of it, takes a heavy toll on queer and trans youth. That’s why we offer free and affirming spaces where young people can find community and safety among peers. Our robust mental health resources include Licensed Social Workers, Drama Therapists, Creative Arts Therapists, a bereavement counselor, and a staff psychiatrist—all dedicated to reducing depression and anxiety, while fostering resilience.
We also provide specialized grief support, recognizing that grief manifests uniquely for each individual. Losing someone to trans violence can have a lasting impact, especially for LGBTQIA+ youth navigating the challenges of identity in a marginalizing world. Our bereavement programs use creative and expressive arts interventions, offering young people pathways for healing, growth, and self-expression.
Let us stand together in solidarity to honor those we’ve lost on this Trans Day of Remembrance. As we reflect on the lives taken too soon, we invite you to join us in advocating for change by supporting HMI’s mission. You can help by making a donation or referring young people in need of affirming care to our programs and services. Together, we can build a future where everyone can live authentically, free from hate, and with the dignity they deserve.
