HMI Denounces SCOTUS Ruling That Puts Trans Youth at Risk
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JUNE 18, 2025, NEW YORK, NY
We are deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Skrmetti, which upholds Tennessee’s cruel and discriminatory ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth. This ruling sets a dangerous precedent—placing politics above the well-being of young people and undermining the rights of families and doctors to make informed, personal healthcare decisions.
At HMI, we witness every day how essential and life-saving gender-affirming care can be—especially for young people navigating a world that too often rejects them. Blocking access to this care not only endangers their mental and physical health—it sends a chilling message that their identities are up for debate.
This decision does not change what we know to be true: trans youth deserve dignity, autonomy, and the freedom to thrive.
We stand in unwavering solidarity with transgender youth, their families, and communities in Tennessee and across the country. This fight is far from over—and we remain committed to pushing forward until every young person, regardless of gender identity, has access to the support and care they need to live fully and freely.
