Hetrick-Martin Institute Condemns Effort to Erase Harvey Milk’s Legacy
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JUNE 5, 2025, NEW YORK, NY
The Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to demonize, degrade, and systematically dismantle the rights and dignity of the LGBTQIA+ community have taken another deeply troubling turn—this time, during Pride Month.
Hetrick-Martin Institute strongly condemns the administration’s decision to strip the name of Harvey Milk from a U.S. Navy vessel. This is more than a symbolic gesture—it is a direct insult to the LGBTQIA+ community and an attempt to erase the legacy of a civil rights pioneer, a veteran, and a patriot who gave his life fighting for equality.
Harvey Milk’s service in the Navy and his historic election as one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States stand as enduring symbols of progress we have made as a nation. Removing his name from a military ship dishonors not only his legacy, but also the countless LGBTQIA+ service members and activists who have risked—and even lost—their lives in the fight for the freedoms we all enjoy.
That this decision comes during Pride Month is no coincidence. It is a calculated move designed to send a chilling message: that diversity is disposable, and that the contributions of marginalized communities are unwelcome and unworthy of recognition.
We reject that message.
Hetrick-Martin Institute stands in unwavering solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, with veterans who have served honorably, and with all who believe that our military—and our nation—should reflect the values of justice, inclusion, and equality for all.
