HMI Warns of Dire Impact as Federal Mental Health Agency Faces Cuts
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MARCH 12, 2025, NEW YORK, NY
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which has already closed offices, could see its staff reduced by 50%, according to senior agency officials and congressional aides briefed by Trump administration officials. SAMHSA provides lifesaving support for individuals with mental health and substance use disorders, but reports indicate that funding for centers serving specific populations—such as Black and LGBTQIA+ communities—is unlikely to be reauthorized.
“As a provider of mental health services for LGBTQIA+ youth, HMI knows how vital these resources are and that they must remain accessible—particularly for queer and trans youth of color, who face disproportionate barriers, especially in today’s political climate,” said Aruna Krishnakumar, Senior Director of Mental Health Services at HMI.
A 2024 national survey by The Trevor Project found that 39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered suicide in the past year, including 46% of transgender and nonbinary youth. LGBTQ+ youth of color reported even higher rates, and more than 1 in 10 (12%) attempted suicide.
The demand for mental health support among LGBTQIA+ youth has surged in recent years, driven by mounting political and legislative challenges. In response, HMI has steadily expanded its Counseling and Case Management teams to ensure continued access to critical services. “Eliminating these services would have devastating and irreversible consequences,” Krishnakumar warned. “Funding is critical to addressing the mental health crisis across all communities, including LGBTQIA+ youth.”
While HMI remains committed to providing free, high-quality care, these cuts threaten critical referral networks and nationwide access to essential services. The impact will be far-reaching, and the need for sustained funding has never been more urgent.
