SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES OF LGBTQIA+ YOUTH
Hetrick-Martin Institute partners with families and caregivers to provide guidance, education, and affirming support, so LGBTQIA+ young people can thrive in safe, loving environments. Navigating identity, mental health, education, and wellbeing can feel overwhelming for both youth and the families who love them. HMI offers resources, counseling, and trusted guidance to help families better understand, support, and advocate for the young people in their lives.
How HMI Supports Families
Our work with families is grounded in compassion, education, and connection. We meet families where they are, offering support that is affirming, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive.
Family Counseling & Support HMI provides on-site family counseling sessions for HMI members and their families by appointment at our NYC location. These sessions create space for open communication, healing, and stronger relationships.
Education & GuidanceOur staff can help answer questions, offer advice, and share resources to support families of LGBTQIA+ youth, whether you’re just beginning your journey or navigating complex challenges.
Community & ConnectionEach year, HMI hosts a family retreat where youth members and their families come together for group activities, learning opportunities, and shared experiences that strengthen bonds and build understanding.
Referrals & ResourcesWhen additional or specialized support is needed, HMI connects families with trusted, affirming providers and community resources.
