Open Art Studio: The Gilbert Baker Flag Art Project

November 11 @ 4:00 pm 6:00 pm

The Gilbert Baker Flag Installation is an massive flag located between Castro and Market Street in San Francisco’s famous Castro District. It has welcomed viewers to the historical LGBTQ neighborhood since it’s Installation on November 8, 1996.

On September 13, 2024, history was made when San Francisco’s mayor London Breed signed legislation landmarking the flag. This was the first time a rainbow flag has ever been designated a landmark. During the ceremony, the newest flag was installed and the old flag was set aside for the Hetrick-Martin Institute.

It is a great honor to receive these flags which are exchanged every 4 months due to weathering. These retired flags have been presented all over the world and on Monday 11/11 at 4pm you can be a part of the unboxing at Hetrick-Martin Institute! Our friends at the Castro Merchants Association will be present for the ceremony. Our members are invited to unbox the flag and brainstorm ways we can use the flag to give it new life and create something new, amazing and meaningful. We hope to see you there!
