FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HETRICK-MARTIN INSTITUTE AND DOMINIQUE JACKSON BAND TOGETHER AMID GROWING ANTI-LGBTQ LEGISLATION
FX Series Pose’s Lead Actress Will Serve as an Ambassador to the LGBTQIA+ Youth Organization
New York, NY, June 28, 2023 – Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) announced today, during Pride month, that model, actress, author and ballroom icon, Dominique Jackson, will be serving as an HMI Ambassador for the LGBTQIA+ youth organization. After being named an Emery Award Honoree at their annual awards ball in November 2021, Dominique and HMI quickly developed a relationship given her advocacy for queer and trans youth of color.
As a prominent and successful trans woman of color, Dominique has made significant strides in paving the way for the trans and LGBTQIA+ community. Best known for her performance as Elektra Abundance in the award-winning FX television series Pose, Dominique has not only had an illustrious career in television, film, and the runway, but has been recognized for her contributions over the years from the Human Rights Campaign, Los Angeles TransNation Festival, and New York State Assembly to name a few.
Dominique’s involvement with the ballroom scene for more than two decades is something that resonates with HMI youth members. Her experience with mental health struggles—an issue that has becoming increasingly prevalent among LGBTQIA+ youth—shared in her memoir, The Transsexual from Tobago, has also hit home with many queer and trans youth. She has been an advocate for social change and transgender rights, speaking out against discrimination and violence faced by trans individuals.
Interim CEO and Chief Development Officer, Amy Harclerode said, “I can’t think of a more fitting role model, not only for our youth members but all queer and trans youth across the globe. Her personal story resonates with so many young people and her determination and successes give them hope and instills them with aspiration. We’re thrilled to have Dominique on board as an ambassador.”
In response to a recent visit by Dominique to HMI, Harclerode adds, “The interaction between Dominique and the youth was intrinsic, underscoring she is a perfect fit for this role. Her admiration and care for our young people was evident, and they in return have so much love and respect for her.” The visit was documented by DKNY in a video for their pride campaign this year.
Dominique remarked on her role as an HMI Ambassador, “I’m honored to have been asked to serve as an ambassador and use my platform to help shed light on the bullying, trauma and violence the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly youth, undergo daily. Mental health challenges among young people remains a growing crisis in our country. Hetrick-Martin provides youth with access to free mental health and wellness services, which is why it made my decision to come on board an easy one.”
