CURRENT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Volunteer Position:    Class Instructor/Teacher

Frequency:                  Every Wednesday Starting September 3
Area:                          
Programs

 

TASKS: Create program design for and facilitate a Wednesday class for HMHS.  The class can be designed around the volunteer’s interests and talents.  Examples of past Wednesday classes (that are not currently being provided) are: creative writing, theatre, music, dance, health ed (nutrition, fitness), performance art.  

 

SCHEDULE:  Wednesdays, 12:30-3:00 starting September 3 and ending mid-January

 

REQUIREMENTS: Experience running groups or teaching high school age students a must

 

ADDITIONAL SKILLS: Curriculum development, Creativity!! 

 

PURPOSE: To provide a much needed enrichment experience to Harvey Milk High School students. 


 

Volunteer Position:    Woman's Basketball Coach/Trainer

Frequency:                  1-2 Days a week/2hrs a day 4-6pm

TASKS:
HMI’s Woman's programming is seeking volunteers to help teach young woman the basics of basketball during a weekly class. In addition to refereeing the scrimmages, volunteers would assist HMI staff in discussing with youth the health benefits of exercise, living drug-free and eating healthy.


SCHEUDLE:
Availability for this position requires 2 hour shifts 1 or 2 days a week from 4 to 6. Volunteers who agree to teach more than two classes per semester will need to be fingerprinted at HMI's expense.

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

Fun, personable and good with youth.  Knowledge of general basketball rules as well as a moderate-well ability to play and teach.

 

PURPOSE:
The course will provide students both theory and practical skills around physical fitness in a safe and unassuming environment. The volunteers will assist these young woman in living healthy lives.

 


Volunteer Position:     SAT Prep Instructor

Frequency:                  At least 1 day a week

Area:                           Programs

 

Position Description:  SAT prep teacher.  HMI and HMHS are seeking an SAT prep teacher who will work with a group of 11th graders preparing for the Spring SAT.   Starting January 2009

 

TASKS: Conduct prep classes 2-3 times a week in all aspects of SAT including content review and general test taking strategies; conduct diagnostic tests; record test score data

 

SCHEUDLE:  2-3 times a week from 4-6pm or more than one Volunteer

 

REQUIREMENTS: General knowledge of the SAT and its content, prior experience working with high school age youth preferably LGBT youth.  Materials provided.

PURPOSE: The SAT scores are often the weakest part of the package for many of our youth applying to college.  It has been proven that students who participate in structured study for the SAT and other similar tests will improve their test scores.  Many SAT prep courses are extremely expensive and/or difficult to access.  By providing an on-site test prep program for our youth we will offer them an opportunity they may otherwise not have.   


Volunteer Position:    Volunteer Program Administrative Assistant

Frequency:                  At least 1 day a week
Area:                          Human Resorces

 

TASKS: 

File, do data entry(Volunteer will learn Raiser's Edge, a valuable skill), make phone calls, run errands, help with event planning and events.

 

SCHEUDLE:  

Flexible but within the hours of 10 -6:00

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

Attention to details, good organizational skills, ability to communicate effectively with Staff and volunteers

 

ADDITIONAL SKILLS: 

Knowledge of Microsoft office. Raiser's Edge a plus 

 

PURPOSE: 

Support the volunteer coordinator and volunteer program.  Become a lead volunteer and help the program to run effectively.


Volunteer Position:    Music Instructor

Frequency:                 At least 1 day a week

TASKS: TO FACILITATE A GROUP AT HMI IN WHICH YOUNG PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT MUSICAL TALENTS WANT TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY INSTRUMENTS, READ MUSIC AND MAKE MUSIC TOGETHER (A BAND)

Start ASAP

 

SCHEDULE: 2X WEEK FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF any day

 

REQUIREMENTS: CAN READ MUSIC AND TEACH OTHERS TO READ MUSIC

 

ADDITIONAL SKILLS: KNOWS HOW TO PLAY MULTIPLE INSTRUMENTS- DRUMS, GUITAR

 

PURPOSE: TO TEACH YOUTH HOW TO READ MUSIC AND PLAY INSTRUMENTS- Support a group/class


 
 

Volunteer Position:    Sewing

Frequency:                 At least 1 day a week

Programs
 

 

TASKS:  HMI is seeking a volunteer who would like to give sewing instruction to our youth.  They are extremely interested in fashion and design.

 

SCHEUDLE:   Preferred availability is for a one - two hour class one day a week between the hours of 3:30 – 7:00, M-F.

 

REQUIREMENTS:  This position requires a fingerprinting credential, which can be paid for by HMI.  An outgoing personality, comfort/experience working with youth, and experience with designing and/or creating simple articles of clothing.

 

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:  General knowledge of sewing machines (we have two on-site). 

 

PURPOSE:  Share knowledge in order to teach and inspire the HMI youth.

Volunteer Position:    Programs Administrative Assistant

Frequency:                  At least 1 day a week

TASKS:  Programs Administrative Assistance

 

SCHEUDLE:  Flexible but should include time between 9:00am – 5:00pm

 

REQUIREMENTS:  works independently, self-initiative

 

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:  Some familiarity with Excel

 

PURPOSE:  To provide support on filing, creation of file and data entry

Volunteer Position:  Graphic Design Assistant 
Frequency:              Occasional/As Needed.
Location:                 Projects can be completed remotely
Area:                      Administrative - Development Department


*** This position can be done remotely, and does not require on-site work***

Tasks:  HMI’s Development Department is seeking support in the creation of graphic design work for the agency.  We would like assistance in creating graphics for direct mail pieces, including invitations and “Save the Dates.”  In addition, we will need graphics for program books and signage for events and possibly layouts needed for advertisements in both trade magazines and professional journals.

Schedule:  The position is flexible and the amount of time requested will depend on the specific job, as well as volunteer availability.  The majority of the design work can be done off-site. 

Requirements:  Strong knowledge of common graphic design programs, especially Photoshop, and proven success with graphic design tasks. A submitted portfolio of past and current work is also required.

Additional Skills:  Proficiency in Illustrator and Quark.

Purpose:  Your work on this project will help generate donor interest and funding for HMI, which in turn ensures that our youth members continue to receive the support they so desperately need.

Volunteer Position:   Assistant Food Handler
Frequency:                  Weekly - (Any day - Friday's encouraged)
Area:                          Youth- Facilities / Kitchen

Tasks:  The responsibilities of this position include: menu design and planning for healthy meals with vegetarian options, food preparation & cooking, serving, clean-up, regular kitchen maintenance (refrigerator cleaning, etc) and administrative tasks- such as inventory and ordering.  All aspects of the position require maintaining a safe and sanitary space.  This position involves direct work with HMI youth members. On-site training will be provided by Full Time Cook.

Schedule: Preferred availability for this position requests availability for at least one shift per week.  (Shifts are 1:00 – 7:00 PM.)  Potential availability to cover for the Full Time Cook during illness and vacations is desirable.  We are seeking volunteers who are interested in providing a long term commitment to the position. 

Requirements: This position requires a fingerprinting credential, which can be paid for by HMI.  Proof of Mantoux tuberculosis test is required. (Free testing is available from the NYC Dept of Health and Mental Hygiene.) Volunteers who have completed the NYC-DOH Food Handler Certification are preferred.  Volunteers who have not completed the certification process will be required to do so.

Purpose:  You will assist in providing healthy, fresh cooked meals to HMI youth during the After-School Program.

Q. What types of volunteer opportunities are available at HMI?

HMI’s Volunteer Program has a wide variety of opportunities available for volunteers. Please check our Volunteer Opportunities section to find out the specifics of what is currently available.  Be sure to check back regularly for new position listings!


Q: I am interested in volunteering at HMI. How can I get involved?

All potential volunteers must first complete an application, which can be downloaded below .  Once you have submitted your application possible next steps may include an in-person interview, background check – including fingerprinting, and orientation. 


Q: What hours are available for volunteering at HMI?

A majority of HMI’s youth programs run between the hours of 3:00PM – 6:00PM, Monday through Friday.  If you are interested in working with youth, but you are not available during these hours, you may want to consider volunteering for special events and youth performances, which will sometimes involve later hours or weekends.  Non-youth volunteer work (administrative assistance, etc) can be completed during standard office hours of 9-6, or other hours by arrangement with your volunteer supervisor.


Q: I am a Social Worker, and I am interested in volunteering.  What Social Work volunteer opportunities do you have available?

HMI is not currently accepting applications for Social Work volunteers.  If you are interested in volunteering in a capacity other than Social Work, please check out our other listings.


Q: I am interested in volunteering for the summer.  What opportunities are available?

Since many of our programs operate on the school year calendar, HMI has fewer volunteer opportunities during the summer.  Please check our position listings for available volunteer positions. 


Q: I am interested in volunteering at Harvey Milk High School.  How can I get involved?

The HMI Volunteer Program does not oversee any potential opportunities for volunteering with Harvey Milk High School.  Please contact Harvey Milk High School  directly with any questions about volunteering for the high school.

If accepted as a part of the Volunteer Program, volunteers must complete all necessary requirements, including fingerprinting, before they will be considered part of the volunteer pool. 

Volunteers are encouraged to apply for specific open positions list above, however, HMI also welcomes applicants who are interested in becoming part of general volunteer pool.  Individuals in our Volunteer Pool may be contacted by HMI when opportunities matching their, skills, interests and availability arise, or may be invited to attend youth performances, etc.
